One of the body parts that show our age is the underarms! We cannot give the priority we give to wrinkles around the eyes, neck and face to this area. Although we often neglect this area, our upper arm skin that hangs down when we raise our arm, especially in summer, makes us very unhappy when we realize it. It is sometimes not possible to recover the upper arm and lower armpits with sports even though the arm muscles have the ability to recover quickly with sports and exercises. Sagging, which we mostly encounter after weight loss or after birth, appears as an aesthetic problem when combined with aging.
You had the most beautiful feeling in the world and you held your child in your arms. You nursed for days and nights.
What is brachioplasty?
Arm lift surgery, also called as brachioplasty, is performed to eliminate the appearance of unwanted slackness under the upper arm. This procedure is the process of removing excess fat and skin tissue and tightening the area.
Why do upper arms get saggy?
Aging, genetic predisposition, rapid weight gain and loss, and giving birth can cause loosening and sagging in the upper arm. Since the skin and subcutaneous tissue of this area is very loose, it is affected much more quickly than other areas on the arm.
How is it done?
Incisions are made from points that can be hidden under layers, such as the area between the elbow and the armpit. If there is an excess of fat tissue under the skin, and the sagging skin are removed. Afterwards, the ideal form of the arm is given by applying aesthetic stitches to the incision sites.
How long does the procedure take?
The duration of the operation varies depending on whether liposuction is applied or the level of sagging. However, we can say that the operation takes about 1 to 3 hours on average.

When is liposuction applicable?
If the sagging in the arm is caused by excess fat tissue, and if the skin has not lost its tight form, the sagging in the arm can be removed only by liposuction. If the skin elasticity is moderate, laser and plasma devices are used for skin tightening together with liposuction. However, excess fat tissue and sagging of the skin are usually observed together, and during the surgery, both excess fat is removed by liposuction and stretching is performed by removing excess skin.
Is it done with general anaesthesia?
According to the preference of the patient and the doctor, it can be performed with general anaesthesia or local sedation.
What are the issues to take into consideration before this procedure?
Before the operation, the path to be followed is determined by a detailed examination. It is necessary to stop using alcohol and smoking one week before the operation. If used, blood thinners should be discontinued.
What to expect after surgery?
If the operation was performed with local anesthesia, it is possible to leave the hospital on the day of the operation. If general anesthesia has been given, an overnight hospital stay is required. A drain is used to remove blood leaks that may accumulate under the arm. This drain is removed after 1 day. The arms will be bandaged for the first few days. You can take a shower two days after the surgery. You can almost return to your daily routine within a week, but heavy physical activity or exercise is strongly discouraged for the first month and a half. The most specific point to be considered after the surgery is to wear binders on the arms. This is important to ensure that the skin merges with the subcutaneous tissue and reaches the ideal form of the arm.
